Saturday Field Trip

Kolob Terrace Road

Meeting Place: Northside parking lot of the Maverick gas station in La Verkin at turn-off to Hwy 9 towards Zion National Park (460 N State St, La Verkin, UT).

About: Kolob Terrace road starts at 3600 feet of elevation and 25 miles later ends at over 8000 feet at Kolob Reservoir. The road goes switches between private, BLM, and National Park lands. We will be stopped at multiple elevations and habitats along the way. Target species at mid-elevations include Virginia Warbler, Juniper Titmouse, Black-chinned Sparrow, Ash-throated Flycatcher, and Cassin’s Kingbird while moving up to higher elevations we will find Grace’s Warbler, Nuthatches, Chipping Sparrows, and Western Bluebirds. Finally, at the height of Kolob Terrace, we will look for soaring California Condors, Bald Eagles, Lewis’ Woodpeckers, Mountain Bluebirds, and Western Tanagers (among many others). Time permitting, we can scan Kolob Reservoir for wandering Loons, Grebes, and other waterfowl.

Bring snacks and plenty to drink. As we will be at higher elevation, it will be cooler but the sun can still be intense so sunscreen is highly recommended.
