Henderson (NV) Bird Viewing Preserve
Please RSVP if you plan to attend so we can prepare for food. This is not a requirement but will really help in our planning.
Meeting Place: 6:45am at the BLM parking lot at 345 E Riverside Dr, in St. George if you would like to arrange car pooling. We will meet at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve in Henderson, Nevada. It is a 2-hour drive but because of the time change, we will plan to meet members of the Red Rocks Audubon chapter at 8:00am Pacific Time.
About: We are so excited to be hosted by the Red Rocks Audubon chapter for this field trip to the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve. The preserve is home to thousands of migratory waterfowl as well as numerous resident desert birds. There are nine ponds available for birding, surrounded by both paved and soft surfaces. The paved path is approximately 3/4 of a mile long and is accessible by wheelchair. The soft surfaces are mostly level and allow for easy walking.
Here is the basic agenda for the day:
8:00am (Pacific Time) Introduction followed by birding with Doug Chang and Paul Rodriguez of the Red Rocks Audubon until approximately 11:00am.
11:00am we've gotten permission from the HBVP staff to use their meeting space to come together for lunch and also to have a chance to learn about both chapters. The RRA is providing a light lunch of sandwiches and snacks. We recommend bringing your own snacks too as there are no restaurants near the preserve.
After lunch those that want to can go to another birding location with the RRA. This will be an informal trip to, most likely, the Las Vegas Wash, not far from the reserve.
Some logistical things for the day:
There is a checkin process for HBVP. We should be prepared to stop and give names and where we are from. There are restrooms in the office building visitors can use. There are a few port-o-potties out in the preserve itself but these are few and far between. The paths are mostly flat and unpaved. There is little shade in the bird preserve itself so definitely have folks bring sunscreen/hats/layers and water, even if it's cool weather. Temperatures are estimated to be between 40 to 55 degrees during our time birding.
