"Seen Only On Paper"

Red-Crested Cardinal

Favorite books of mine have pictures of birds, birds, birds.  Big birds, small birds, colorful and drab birds.  Birds from all over the world.   Some of the most beautiful birds are seen only on paper.  My family knows about my books.  Last week I got a call from my daughter in Hawaii asking . . . Mom, what kind of bird did I just see?  With my books and the description she gave me, I found it was a Red-Crested Cardinal.  A beautiful bird I had personally never seen.

Red-crested Cardinal       The Red-Crested Cardinal is a songbird with a prominent red head and crest. This striking bird was introduced in Hawaii around 1930 from South America. It is found in northern Argentina, Bolivia, southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and now Hawaii.   If you plan to travel to any of these countries, you just might find this colorful Cardinal.  This bird has a crested red head with a white strip around the neck and white belly.  The back is gray and the bill is yellow.  As you travel, if you see other birds with them in a group, with a brown crest and head and a black bill, it’s a juvenile Red-Crested Cardinal.  The juveniles may look as large as the adult birds, but the juvenile’s adolescence insecurity keeps them begging for food from Mom as long as she puts up with it.   They feed on seeds, plant matter, insects and fruits.

In this day and age, when traveling to different places and countries is so available, if you don’t have a book, Bird Aps can be purchased to be loaded onto your mobile devices which gives you the ability to enjoy each new destination with its bird life and habitat.  The Avibase - World Bird Database shows more than 10,000 bird species.   That’s a lot of birds and means there are a lot of places you can travel and see new bird species each time.  I hope you consider adding birds to your travel itinerary.
