"A Feeding Frenzy"

American Robins

What funny memories do you have? Memories that make you smile every time you think about them? My Honey and I have lots of those, and so many are memories about birds. Like the time we lived in Salt Lake and there was a house next door with lots of apple trees. It had been a great summer and the apple trees had a bumper crop of apples. The new renters at that house didn’t pick ANY of this apple crop and 90% ended up on the ground. A heavy winter snow storm hit us early that year, and the apples still on the trees looked like Christmas ornaments. The apples on the ground were buried in a drunk robinsblanket of snow. In that strange, cold winter, there were sunny days, more snow, sunny days, more snow and the apples proceeded to ferment. Fermenting apples will make a type of alcohol brandy. Many of the early US East Coast colonies had a liking for apple brandy. It brought a great source of revenue and pride to the farmers producing the apple brandy.

Well, spring finally came and this bumper crop of apples looked like a messy banquet table under the apple trees. Then a flock of Robins arrived, looking for a meal and found enough soft fruit on this banquet table to feed hundreds of hungry Robins. Was this turning into a Keg Party? What would the outcome be? Within a short time the word went out, and the ground under the apple trees became covered with Robins. inebriated Robins. They couldn’t walk a straight line, they kept tipping over, some rolled with their feet in the air, others were attempting to fly, but couldn’t. We saw lots and lots of Robins showing effects of apple brandy. The whole setting looked like an old black and white Laurel and Hardy Movie. Drunk Robins were here, there, and everywhere. Alas, there was no way to issue tickets to birds flying while under the influence.

Soon more Robins, attracted by the feeding frenzy arrived, crashing the party, trying for their share of this buffet. All the Robins who partook must have had major hangovers the following day! Be careful what you have in your yard for hungry birds to eat!  There are so many interesting things that happen in the bird world. Take time to enjoy the outdoors. Maybe you too will have a story to share.
