"Sweet Sweet Sweet - I’m So Sweet"

Yellow Warbler

How long has it been since you visited Tonaquint Park . . . perhaps never?  Parents, kids, singles, grandparents, scientists and birders . . . this is the place to go!  North America has more than 50 species of Warblers. The Yellow Warbler, a favorite of mine, hangs out at Tonaquint Park. This brilliant Yellow Warbler is always eager to ‘sing his heart out’ in Springtime. Recently Bloomington, Heritage and Panorama Elementary
yellow warblerSchools  brought their students to Tonaquint Park to learn about plants, insects, habitats and bird life. This was the perfect classroom for students to learn and understand what’s in our wonderful world.

Sure as clockwork . . . the Yellow Warbler was there to greet the students and to show off a bit. It is a brilliant yellow bird with a few reddish stripes on the breast. The face is unmarked and accentuates the dark eye. The Yellow Warbler’s song was heard all over the park. It came from the top of one tree, then another tree, then near the Tonaquint Pond, and again by the river running by. What a noisy bird! But a smart bird because we never got to see it, only hear it. You would think a bright yellow bird would be easy to see, but the yellow blends perfectly with the many shades of green leaves in Tonaquint Park.

If you would like this experience, have never seen or heard a Yellow Warbler, and know someone who went on this school outing, have them tell you where to go and why Tonaquint is a special place. When you get there, listen for ‘sweet sweet sweet - I’m so sweet’ sung over and over again. That’s the song. Yellow Warblers eat mostly insects, so they don’t come to feeders. If your yard is large and has trees and maybe a water feature there is a very good chance that you will have this visitor this spring. I hope you hear ‘sweet sweet sweet - I’m so sweet’ soon.

Enjoy the spring migration at Tonaquint. Marilyn Davis is the artist this week. For more information about birds or Red Cliffs Audubon activities call 435 673-0996 or visit our home page.  Past "Artists & Birds" articles are listed in the table below.
