"Faraway Places"

Black-throated Blue Warbler

black-throated blue warbler       Have you ever dreamed of going to exotic lands, taking trips by boat across the ocean, or flying above the clouds in a jet airplane to escape the winds of winter? Have you ever dreamed of soft, sunny beaches, or traveling through green jungles? Many of us try to dream up excuses that just might seem plausible to our spouse for a reasonto travel to faraway places. Need some help?

Birders can come up with a perfect excuse to travel. They call it having a “Life List”. When they’ve seen all the local birds, it’s timee to dream and scheme to find new and better bird species in faraway places. A great reason to travel! It’s even better if a certain bird only lives in the places you’d like to visit. The Black-throated Blue Warbler is one of those life birds worth traveling to faraway places to see. This magnificent blue, black, and white colored bird spends the summer in southeastern Canada and northeastern United States. Come winter, the Black-throated Blue Warbler can be found in Jamaica, Bahama, the Caribbean Coasts of Costa Rica, Panama, Columbia, and Venezuela. Does that sound like places you’d like to travel to?

The chances of spotting this small warbler in the green landscapes of the Caribbean are slim. Its coloration against a background of green leaves makes it almost impossible to see, but . . . you will be warm and the beaches will be close by. Let me know if you need some help with that life list.  Our artist this week is Brenda Rusnell. Thanks, Brenda, for this beautiful drawing.
